Prior to PSU, I was... Teaching English in a
small village in Kyrgyzstan as a Peace Corps volunteer. Then I
moved to Portland and started doing undercover immersion-style
news stories for Willamette Week and Hipfish Monthly.
When I was applying to graduate school, I wish I knew...
How fun it would be.
I chose my program because... I had lunch
with Paul Collins over the summer and he convinced me that
learning nonfiction writing on a graduate level would help
bring my prose to a higher, more professional level. He was right.
My favorite class/professor so far has been... All
of them. The nonfiction writing faculty at Portland State University
is as good or better than any more well-known programs in the
country. I feel very fortunate to have ended up here.
My professional goals after I graduate from PSU are...
to work as a writer/editor for an outdoors-themed magazine while
continuing to teach writing at the University level.
My favorite spot on campus to study is... the
basement of the library. People rarely go down there and when I
get bored I can thumb through dusty old travel journals from
explorers like Sir Richard Burton.
My key to success at PSU is... to weasel as much
information about the writing industry out of the faculty as possible.
They are a fantastic professional resource with a wide range of
connections. I don't want to leave graduate school with any questions
unanswered. I also think it's important to balance out academic
work with real-life experiences through internships.
