The undergraduate program at Portland State University offers a wide variety of areas for specialization within the broader
field of English. While working towards a BA in English, students have the option of pursuing a concentrated course of study
in the theory and practice of writing and rhetoric.
See Writing, Reading, and Rhetoric Studies for information
on the courses available, the field of rhetoric and composition, and courses that prepare you for teaching and non-teaching jobs in English.
PSU also offers Writing Intensive Courses (WIC) that use writing as a vehicle for learning. Unlike a writing instruction course in which class time is devoted to
learning the tools of the writing process, a Writing Intensive Course uses various kinds of writing assignments to deepen thinking about course content. A Writing Intensive Course also
helps you learn how to write as a professional within your major field of study. To learn more,
see the Writing Intensive Courses website.
A Minor in Writing is also a good way to learn new approaches to reading and writing, and to practice both critical and creative
thinking. The Minor in Writing has four concentrations: creative, nonfiction, technical, and book publishing. Each of these
concentrations is echoed in our graduate program should you choose to continue your studies in writing.
See the Minor in Writing
for a list of the courses available for each concentration.
See Graduate Studies if you are interested in learning more about
our M.A. or M.S. in Writing programs.
