Concentrations

The graduate programs at Portland State University offer a wide variety of areas for specialization within the broader field of English. While working towards the Master's degree in English or the Master's degree in Writing, students have the option of pursuing a concentrated course of study in the theory and practice of writing and rhetoric. See Writing, Reading, and Rhetoric Studies for information on the courses available, the field of rhetoric and composition, and courses that prepare you for teaching and non-teaching jobs in English.

Additionally, our 48-credit Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees in Writing include specializations in Creative Writing (Fiction/Poetry), Nonfiction, Professional and Technical Writing, and Book Publishing. While the specializations delineate a student's field of study and contain many areas of interest within them, students are encouraged to take classes in a variety of areas. For more information about the M.A./M.S. in Writing, see Graduate Programs.
