The Portland State University English Department offers three graduate degrees: the Master of Arts in English, the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing,
and the Master of Arts/Master of Science in Writing. The 45 credit M.A. in English is designed for students who are prepared to undertake advanced work in
literature, rhetoric, composition, and critical theory. The 48 credit M.F.A. degree offers an intensive program of writing in small, core workshops and seminars taught by established
writers. It includes specializations in Fiction, Nonfiction, or Poetry. The 48 credit M.A./M.S. degrees in Writing have two options: Professional and Technical Writing and Book Publishing.
The Professional and Technical Writing option provides a broad approach to technical communication, offering classes in areas such as editing, design, online documentation, and information technology.
The Book Publishing option provides the opportunity to work at Ooligan Press, a teaching press in the Department of English,
as well as classes in areas such as book marketing, promotion, and publications management.
