Welcome to the Portland State University's Department of English. We encourage you
to search our website to learn more about our academic programs and our nationally
recognized faculty. If our programs seem like a good fit
for your interests, please apply. We hope to have your
creative and intellectual energy here as a graduate student in the Department of English!
The Department of English offers graduate degrees in English literature and Writing.
- The 45 credit Master of Arts in English is designed for
students who are prepared to undertake advanced work in literature, rhetoric, composition, and critical theory.
- The 48 credit Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing offers an intensive program of writing in small, core workshops and seminars taught by established writers.
It includes specializations in Fiction, Nonfiction, or Poetry. Visit the MFA website for more details about the program.
- The 48 credit Master of Arts/Master of Science in Writing has two options: Professional and Technical Writing and Book Publishing. The Professional and Technical Writing
option provides a broad approach to technical communication, offering classes in areas such as editing, design, online documentation, and information technology. The Book Publishing option provides
the opportunity to work at Ooligan Press, a teaching press in the Department of English, as well as offering classes in areas such
as book marketing, promotion, and publications management.
What kind of student chooses our graduate programs? The motives and destinations of our students vary.
Some go on to doctoral study in English, others teach in high schools or community colleges,
while others become professional writers or publishers. Some pursue the degree
simply for their own interest and enrichment.
See Meet a Grad Student to learn more about our current graduate students and recent alumni. Read about the accomplishments of our
students on the Great Expectations blog. Or email our Graduate Administrator if you
have questions about application or registration procedures. For queries regarding program requirements and curricula, please contact the Directors of our Graduate Programs.
Our faculty and staff look forward to getting to know you.
